NIKOLA NIKOLA

Nothing Nowhere + Nobody

An exhibition of black and white photography

May 23-June 20, 2009.

Nothing Nowhere + Nobody is a new exhibition of black-and-white photography by Nikola Nikola. The works evoke the earthly and the interstellar, and in particular the rugged poetry of the Canadian landscape as imagined by eyes that have seen television or DNA under a microscope or black holes in a simulation. There’s an intense expressionist willingness -- the gestures of the human hand, too, not just the computer mouse -- to distort, engrave and transfigure, to push the limits of the chemically produced negative and the digitally processed file. These works bridge the old-time magic of the darkroom and the etcher’s art with the clickable possibilities of the desktop.
